Principle 1: Teacher speaks Dutch as much as possible during class
When you are living and working in an international environment, it can be very difficult to get exposure to Dutch. Especially, since the Dutch themselves often reply in English, when you want to use your Dutch in practice.
At Boost Your Dutch, the teacher speaks Dutch as much as possible to maximise your exposure. But not to worry, English will be used as a support language if necessary.
During the programme, materials are increasingly made in Dutch, helping you to understand Dutch more-and-more in a natural way. To ensure you completely understand what is being said, we start with short scripts and images in Dutch.
Wat is groen?
De appel is groen.
Principle 2: Students learn topics in a context, they fully understand
Traditional courses tend to use a bottom-up approach, whereby topics are studied separately and you are expected to create a higher level of understanding yourself. At the 1st Boost Your Dutch course, you build the Boost-Your-Dutch-Framework. This framework not only includes Dutch grammar elements and their variations, but it also shows you how all these elements work together.
During our lessons, we take an international perspective by including local activities, which internationals are likely to engage in themselves, e.g. describing the route from “ISA” (International School of Amsterdam) to “Stadshart”, the shopping centre in Amstelveen.
Wat is niet groen?
De banaan is niet groen.
Principle 3: Tools are provided to increase exposure outside class
The Boost Your Dutch programme uses the online vocabulary tool “Quizlet”, which enables you to work on your Dutch vocabulary anytime and anywhere. The tool can be used on your computer and as an app on your mobile phone or tablet.
We also recommend free apps, podcasts, videos, tv-programmes, etc. to help you integrate Dutch into your daily life by listening, reading and watching things in Dutch. Experimenting with a variety of real-life tools, formats and content enables you to pick and choose options that you find interesting/handy to regularly use yourself.
Principle 4: Interactive lessons encourage students to engage
Since lessons are held individually and in small groups, students feel at ease and happy to try things themselves. Our positive and friendly atmosphere encourages students to quickly let go of any language fears they may have. Immediately from their 1st lesson onwards, students are invited to actively partake.
Making short exercises and stories together, encourages students to develop their Dutch skills, whilst having fun, which is vitally important for keeping your motivation high.
Unexpected, fun images help to explain things easily and to remember them better!
Waar is de banaan?
De banaan is op de man.
Principle 5: Students speak Dutch immediately from their 1st lesson
Internationals believe Dutch is a difficult language to learn and they do not see any similarities. However, numerous Dutch and English words share a common root and many Dutch words made their way into the English language. We accelerate your learning process by remaining close to English vocabulary, as we appreciate that using similar words helps you to build up your basic Dutch vocabulary much faster.
At Boost Your Dutch, we firmly believe that there is no better time to start speaking Dutch than the present. However, it is also true that “you cannot improve your Dutch, if you are not learning any new words.”
